**The short answer:** moorings and structures on water usually need a consent from your regional council in New Zealand, or approval from your state waterways authority in Australia. Rules vary by place and waterway, so ask early. This guide is general information, not legal advice.

## New Zealand

### Jetties, pontoons and swim rafts

Structures in the coastal marine area, lakes and rivers usually need a resource consent from your regional council. A [floating jetty](https://www.pontoonzboats.com/compare/modular-pontoons-vs-fixed-jetty/) usually still needs one, but involves no piling works in the seabed or lakebed. Talk to the council before ordering; we supply the pod specifications and load ratings they ask for.

### Houseboats

Mooring a [houseboat](https://www.pontoonzboats.com/houseboats/) usually needs a mooring or coastal permit from your regional council, and a cabin used as a dwelling may need a building consent from the district council. Rules vary by region and waterway, so talk to your councils early and before you order.

### Boats

Recreational boats in New Zealand generally don't need registration, but Maritime NZ safety rules apply. A [pontoon boat](https://www.pontoonzboats.com/pontoon-boats/) or [work barge](https://www.pontoonzboats.com/work-barges/) that operates commercially may need survey with Maritime NZ.

## Australia

Boats, houseboats and waterway structures are registered and approved by each state's maritime or waterways authority, and requirements differ by state. Jetties and pontoons generally need approval from the state waterways authority and sometimes the local council. Motorised boats are registered with your state maritime authority, and commercial vessels may need survey with AMSA. Some waterways have their own rules for houseboat size, sewage holding and mooring. See [pontoons in Australia](https://www.pontoonzboats.com/australia/) for shipping and AU$ pricing.
