What is a Pontoonz pod and how does it work?

Pontoonz pods are rotomoulded, marine-grade, UV-stabilised polyethylene (plastic) floats that link together modularly to create boats, rafts, jetties, walkways, and more. You configure however long and wide and then build whatever you want on top of the pontoon platform.

What types of pods are available?

There are five types: Boat Pods, Bow/Speed Pods, Raft Pods, Walk Pods, Float Pods, and Dinghy pods, each suited to different applications from motorised vessels to floating walkways, floating tiny houses, work barges etc.

How much weight can each pod hold?

It depends on the pod type. Boat pods are rated at 150kg per pod at half immersion (350kg fully immersed). Walk pods handle 150kg half immersed, and Float Pods around 40kg each. Raft pods 60kg half immersed per pod.

How long do the pods last?

The pods have an expected lifespan of greater than 15 years, thanks to their UV-stabilised, marine-grade polyethylene construction.

Can I choose the colour of my pods?

Yes. Pods are available in a range of colours to suit your project. Most popular being grey, black and yellow.

DIY & Assembly

Do I need special skills or tools to build with Pontoonz pods?
No. The system is designed for DIY construction. The modular pods link together without specialist marine knowledge, though basic building skills will help when adding a deck or structure on top. Simply cut, drill and bolt.

What do I need to add on top of the pods to make a usable platform or boat?
You'll need to add your own decking, framing, and any superstructure (cabin, canopy, etc.) on top of the pods. Pontoonz can provide guidanceand ideas on configuration.

Can I expand or reconfigure my pontoon later?
Yes. The modular system means you can add more pods or change the layout as your needs evolve.

Applications

What can I build with Pontoonz pods?
The pods can be used to build motorised pontoon boats, houseboats, swim rafts, picnic barges, floating jetties and docks, aquaculture platforms (oyster/mussel barges), pump barges, work barges, wetland walkways, dive & fishing platforms, boating for the physically impaired, gold dredging, and more.

Are Pontoonz pods suitable for use in saltwater/coastal environments in NZ and Australia?
Yes. The marine-grade, UV-stabilised polyethylene is designed to withstand saltwater environments common around NZ and Australian coastlines and estuaries.

Idealy suited for “closed” waterways such as estuaries, rivers and lakes.

Can I put a motor on a Pontoonz boat?
Yes. The Boat Pods and Speed/Bow Pods are designed for motorised use. The bow pods (including the newer Speed Pods) provide a streamlined nose for moving through the water. eg. The Pontoonz Cedar clad floating shed used a 9.9HP 4 stroke long shaft outboard with electric start, power tilt and high thrust prop.

Can Pontoonz platforms be used for aquaculture such as oyster or mussel farming?
Yes. Pontoonz has supplied barges specifically for the oyster and aquaculture industry.

How much do Pontoonz pods cost?
Pricing depends on pod type, quantity, and shipping. Volume discounts apply, so it's best to contact Pontoonz directly with your project details for a quote.

Do you ship to Australia?
Yes. Pontoonz is designed and manufactured in Auckland, NZ, and sold worldwide. Contact them to discuss shipping costs to Australian destinations. To keep costs down, Pontoonz ships direct to all states in Australia.

Consents & Regulations (NZ & Australia)

Do I need a building or marine consent to build a pontoon platform or houseboat in NZ?
This depends on the intended use and location. Most “private use” Pontoonz do not require any registration in NZ but commercial application may be subject to survey and Maritime regulations.

Do I need to register my Pontoonz vessel in NZ or Australia?
Motorised vessels over a certain size or power threshold may need to be registered. In NZ, check with Maritime NZ; in Australia, rules vary by state. Contact your local maritime authority (e.g., Maritime Safety Queensland, Transport for NSW, etc.).

Are there restrictions on where I can place a floating jetty or dock in NZ or Australia?
Yes. Waterway and foreshore use is regulated. In NZ this typically involves the regional council and potentially the local iwi. In Australia it varies by state. Always check before installation.

Environmental & Maintenance

Are Pontoonz pods environmentally friendly?
The pods are made from durable, long-lasting plastic (15+ years), reducing the need for replacement. They don't use anti-fouling paint and have no fuel leak risk from the float itself. Each main boat pod has a capacity of approx 350 litres and can store fresh, grey or black water safely.

How do I maintain my Pontoonz pods?
Maintenance is minimal, one of the key advantages of the system. Occasional cleaning using a water blasterand inspection of connections is typically all that's required.
